Adare Biome: a rich heritage of innovation, from Dr Boucard to today

Although the concept “postbiotics” seems relatively new, our activities date back more than a century: the solutions we offer today were created at the beginning of the 20th century, by a French physician: Dr Boucard. Our modern activity is the direct inheritance of these historical discoveries. Find out more about our rich heritage, which we build on and continue to evolve.

A story beginning in the early 20th century

The origins of Adare Biome date back to 1907. Dr Boucard, a French physician, discovered microorganisms with positive effects on health. To deepen his research, he decided to study those microorganisms after heat treatment. The outcome was groundbreaking: those inactivated microorganisms proved to have positive effects on patients with diarrhea. After further investigations, Dr Boucard isolated two strains: Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus fermentum. By combining those two strains and their spent culture medium, Dr Boucard went on to develop a pioneering diarrhea treatment and an iconic product, Lacteol®, was born. Initially available in tablet form, then in drinkable phials, it was used to treat patients with digestive disorders.

The product was designed to treat the whole family, both adults and children. After a sustained period of effective results, Dr Boucard developed a pioneering postbiotic treatment for animals: Zoo-Lactéol®, used to treat diarrhea and digestive disorders in farm animals.

Dr Boucard

Without knowing what he had discovered, Dr Boucard was introducing the concept of postbiotics: “a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host”. While the concept is increasingly under the spotlight today, the true pioneer of postbiotics was Dr Boucard, creator of Lactéol®.

After Dr Boucard, the story continues

After Dr Boucard launched Lactéol®, the product was first commercialized in France, and then in Europe. After he died, the range was then handled by Dr.Boisseau, under the name of “Laboratoire du Lactéol® du Dr Boucard” (Laboratory of Dr Boucard’s Lactéol®). He reduced the dosage, concentrated the active ingredients, and innovated with lyophilization. During this time, new production technologies were introduced, but the principle remained the same: the two inactivated strains and their spent culture medium.

the story continues

In the late 1970’s, production moved to Houdan, where the manufacturing facilities are still located today. In the 1990’s, the company extended its activities to other markets outside Europe. after having belonged to different laboratories, our microbiome activities joined Adare Pharmaceuticals, and was renamed Adare Biome in 2019, incorporating all postbiotics activities: Lactéol® and postbiotic ingredients. The structure you know today was born.

Constantly evolving postbiotic solutions: from Lactéol® to LBiome and LBiotix

Although the strains and culture medium have remained the same, research has continued. Concentrations, formulations, processes: the solution has continued to evolve since 1907 and throughout the 20th century up to today. With Lactéol®, Adare Biome’s expertise is demonstrable in digestive health treatments for the whole family. Going beyond tradition, Lacteol® demonstrates proven clinical efficiency in diarrhea treatment and is used by millions of patients in almost 40 countries around the world. Going further, we now offer postbiotic solutions at another level with our two unique ingredients: LBiome™, dedicated to human and pet; and LBiotix™ dedicated to feed solutions, for different species: swine, ruminants, poultry, fish.
